Is a mosquito mister right for my Louisiana or Mississippi home?

If mosquitoes are driving you and your family crazy, you have probably already started researching mosquito control options. After all, not only do mosquitoes leave you with annoying  bites all over your body, they can carry serious diseases like the West Nile and Zika viruses that can, in extreme cases, cause neurological problems and birth defects.
No one wants to worry about that.
Aside from hoping your local mosquito board makes the rounds near your home,, there are two primary mosquito control systems available to homeowners – a barrier system that is applied by a pest control agent across your property every 30-60 days, and a mister or mosquito misting system, which automatically sprays timed bursts of repellant.
Which system is best for your Louisiana or Mississippi Gulf Coast home? Read on to learn more.

What is a Barrier System?

Barrier systems, which are the mosquito abatement program of choice here at Fischer Environmental, are applied by a pest control operator in your yard and around standing water where mosquitoes live, breed and eat.
This pest control system is considered superior not only because it is applied where mosquitoes are most likely to be found, but because it kills both adult mosquitoes and larvae.
It’s also safer & longer lasting. The barrier systems that are used by Fischer Environmental target only mosquitoes – leaving children, animals, and plants safe from the chemicals used to kill both adult and larval mosquitoes.
Additionally, the treatment lasts longer because it attacks the mosquitoes where they breed and kills not only the active adults but the larvae as well.

Misting Systems

Unlike barrier systems that are applied around your entire property, misters or foggers are installed around your chosen outdoor space – like a patio, deck, or pool area.
Misters spray at periodic intervals, doing a good job of killing adult mosquitoes that are near the spray radius.
Think of them like bug spray. They keep mosquitoes away temporarily, but they don’t kill the mosquitoes who are outside of it’s immediate reach (or more importantly, their larvae).
Misting systems can cost more in the long run. Releasing mosquito repellant frequently and maintaining a working system is less efficient than a more comprehensive professional barrier system that lasts for weeks, not just minutes.

Mosquitoes are a Fact of Life in Southern Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast

In a climate like ours, mosquitoes are a fact of life. A misting system is a quick fix, but the long-term costs of supply and maintenance can get you into more than you bargained for.
